Open Table is a ministry that we will be starting at SMM this year. This ministry serves the homeless, working poor, young adults transitioning out of foster care, veterans, probation/re-entry, HIV+ and survivors of human trafficking. These family members seek to find and implement new direction for their lives. Rather than giving them “things” they gain training and knowledge so that they no longer need to ask for assistance.
This is a national program, is endorsed by Bishop Noonan and is being promoted by Catholic Charities.
Last year, we invited the parish to an introductory meeting for Open Table, and many of you expressed an interest in volunteering.
If you attended the meeting and still would like to volunteer, we are about to get started. There will be a meeting on Wednesday, May 30, at 7:00 p.m. in the Cana Conference Room. This meeting will provide a more detailed overview of the training involved, what is needed from volunteers, and details on the commitment volunteers make to the Family Member at the table.
We are planning to launch 3 tables in a staggered approach in 2018; one serving a victim of human trafficking, one serving someone who was incarcerated and one serving a young person who has aged out of the foster care system. Eight to ten volunteers are needed for each table.
If you did not attend the first introductory meeting and think you might be interested in volunteering, or if you attended last year’s meeting and would a refresher, there will be another introductory meeting held before the detailed volunteer meeting on Tuesday, May 22, at 7:00 p.m. in the Cana Conference Room.
