Socially Responsible Investing

The Season of Creation is a time to cultivate ecological conversion.  The U.S. Bishops affirm that “We must also learn the art of listening to protect the environment” in their statement on this year’s World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation (September 1).  The Bishops point to a recent revision of their investment guidelines to incorporate  five aspects of “Saving our global common home” - climate change, biodiversity, water and natural resources, technology and environmental impact - as key considerations for responsible investment.  The guidelines the USCCB uses to work towards living out Catholic Social teaching in their investments are published on their website in hopes that they may be helpful to others who wish to be ethical and responsible to the common good in their investments.   What considerations most affect investment decisions, and how might these change if we listen more attentively to the voice of Creation?

Pope Francis’s 2022 Message

Pope Francis releases a special message for the Celebration of World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation.  Read it HERE.  His 2022 message elaborates on 4 primary points:

  • The Season of Creation is a time to cultivate ecological conversion.
  • Listening to the Voice of Creation, we hear a dissonance between ‘a sweet song and a bitter cry.’
  • This year’s upcoming United Nations conferences, COP 27 on Climate & COP 15 on Biodiversity, are crucial opportunities to reverse these crises, demanding prayer and action.
  • Four key principles for biodiversity needed to halt further collapse of the “web of life” include ethical transformation, sustainable conservation, global solidarity, and centering vulnerable people, such as indigenous people, older people and youth.
