St PETER CLAVER PRISON MINISTRY (SPCPM) VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

SPCPM has volunteers participating in 3 levels of prison ministry:  1) Reentry through St Peter Claver Prison Ministry. 2) Orlando’s Kairos Inside and Outside Men and Women Prison Ministry and, 3) Catholic Eucharistic Services at Central Florida Reception Center

St Peter Claver Prison Ministry (SPCPM) is prison ministry working in concert with the Society of St Vincent DePaul. Through their works of mercy they are transforming the lives of prisoners, returning citizens and their families. SPCPM is a faith-based prison reentry program that serves in 4 Central Florida Correctional Institutions. SPCPM staff and volunteers run events and programs that include sharing the Gospel and spreading hope to incarcerated men and women in a very pragmatic manner. SPCPM is a mentorship program that prepares the incarcerated with 6 months of goal development and life skills preparation and follows them up during their reentry.

ADVOCATING FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE THAT RESTORES

SPCPM advocates for a more restorative style passage toward restoration, reintegration and redemption. Established on the biblical belief that all people are made in God’s image with inherent dignity and potential. SPCPM believes that God’s justice is inherently connected to healing the harmed, restoring what has been lost, and reconciling those who are estranged from God and community.

THE PROBLEM

Each year, the nation spends over $80 billion to incarcerate and re-incarcerate people. While more than 600,000 Americans are released from correctional facilities annually, two-thirds are rearrested within three years. The U.S. has 5% of the world’s population but leads with 25% of the world’s prisoners. Florida’s recidivism is approximately 30%. One out of 3 reoffend within 3 years of release.

THE SOLUTION

Our recidivism rate shows that only 1 out of 10 SPCPM participants known as “Returning Citizens” reoffend after completion of course instruction. Volunteers are devoted to helping prepare men and women leave prison with a positive attitude—ready to succeed. Our curriculum of instruction is a 20 week best practices solution called “Passport to Success”. In all 4 prison facilities, we offer mentorships, life-skills training, parenting classes, and other programs that teach personal responsibility, the value of education and hard work, and care for people and their property, so that prisoners are prepared to thrive in their communities after release.
