First Communion

Preparation for First Holy Communion is a shared ministry with parents, children and catechists (teachers). Children in the second grade or older are fully initiated into the celebration of the Mass through Scripture stories, prayer experiences, music and discussion. Child/parent sessions are offered four Tuesday evenings starting in January and ending in April.

Families come to church for prayer at 6:45 pm. Parents and children then separate for their sessions. Children attend classes in the grade school with a catechist. Adults attend presentations that delve into adult issues related to the Eucharist. Through sacrament preparation, the entire family can gain a stronger connection to our church community.

Faith Formation is life-long. Children who prepare for the Sacrament of Eucharist must be enrolled either in the Faith Formation program or in St. Margaret Mary Catholic Grade School. In addition, children should have already celebrated the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation and must have submitted a copy of their baptismal certificate.

Adult catechists and assistants are needed to prepare the children. Materials and training are provided. Catechists teach two sessions for First Penance and four sessions for First Holy Communion. Catechists must have participated in Safe Environment training and must be fingerprinted.
