Did you know that nearly 1 in 8 Americans - 41.7 million people receive SNAP benefits to reduce food insecurity?
Please take a few minutes to write short letters to your Senators urging them to make ending hunger a top priority.
Leave letters in the Bread for the World basket in the parish hall or return to the table in the courtyard after Masses June 6-7.
The House recently passed their version of the Farm Bill and the Senate will be working on this in the coming weeks. A current U.S. Bishops’ action alert applauds the House bill for continuing key international food security and nutrition programs. However, they state that it fell short here at home, failing to do enough to protect and strengthen the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the nation’s largest anti-hunger program. The Bishops encourage us to write our Senators urging them to do more to help families put food on the table.
Be an advocate! Urge Senators Rick Scott & Ashley Moody to:
- Restore, protect, and strengthen U.S. nutrition programs – including SNAP and WIC-- that help families put food on the table. Support a bill that supports farmers, strengthens communities and helps end hunger.
- Robustly fund global nutrition programs that prevent and treat malnutrition, especially among children, including programs in the House Farm Bill: Food for Peace program, The McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition program and Feed the Future, a global food security program.
- Your voice matters: Together, we can help ensure that compassion, solidarity and care for vulnerable people remain at the heart of the Farm Bill.
- Personalize your message: Constituents’ voices influence congressional decision-making, especially when messages include a personal story or reflect how this issue impacts your community.
- A short handwritten letter has more impact than an automated email. Write one at home this week and bring completed letters to the Bread for the World basket at the front of the parish hall or to the table in the courtyard after Masses on June 6-7.
- Include your name & address with zipcode so they know you are a constituent.
Bring completed Letters to the “Bread for the World” basket at the front of the Parish Hall over the next week, or to the courtyard table on June 6-7.

Policies to Consider Including
- Modernize WIC: Pass S.3842 (21st Century WIC Act) in the Senate and HR 1464 (Modern WIC Act) in the house to make remote services permanent & reduce barriers to increase accessibility.
- Restore SNAP to what it was before HR-1, restoring key Federal-State partnership components and delaying new cost-sharing requirements for states.
- Protect School Meals which address food insecurity and contribute to improved academic performance, better test scores and enhanced attendance.
- End felony based SNAP exclusions for returning citizens. Food security reduces crime & recidivism, resulting in improved public safety & fewer taxpayer dollars spent on incarceration.
- Fully fund and strengthen global food, health, and development programs that promote human flourishing and help keep America safe, strong, and prosperous.
If you don’t hand write a letter, considered most effective, an automated letter, is worthwhile:

“The prayer which we repeat at every Mass: "Give us this day our daily bread," obliges us to do everything possible, in cooperation with international, state and private institutions, to end or at least reduce the scandal of hunger and malnutrition afflicting so many millions of people in our world.” (Pope Benedict, Sacramentum Caritatis, N.90)
