May: National Mental Health Awareness Month

By Olivia Ambs, LMHC - SMM Parishoner

As Catholics, we are called to care for the whole person—body, mind, and soul. While we often focus on our spiritual well-being, it is equally important to recognize the value of mental health in our journey of faith. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to break the stigma, foster understanding, and support those who struggle with mental health challenges.

The Catholic Church has long emphasized the dignity of every person, created in the image and likeness of God. Mental health is an essential aspect of human dignity, and as a faith community, we are called to extend compassion and care to those experiencing anxiety, depression, or other mental health conditions. It is valuable and healing for faithful individuals to offer those in distress, including ourselves, love and understanding.

As we observe Mental Health Awareness Month, let us take time to pray for those who suffer in silence, for caregivers, and for professionals who work to heal minds and hearts. May we continue to foster a parish environment of openness, compassion, and love, reflecting the mercy of Christ to all. Let us be the hands and feet of Christ, offering comfort and support to those in need.
